A Hidden Fire

As part of Keeley's W.H.I.R.T.Y. read-a-thon, I'm bringing a slight variation of "Why Haven't I Reviewed That Yet"!
I intend to bring an extra highlight to all those books that I have read, but not posted a review for.
Between the 11th - 17th May, I will be posting a new book every day.

The fourth in my W.H.I.R.T.Y. week is A Hidden Fire, by Elizabeth Hunter.  This was another free book that I downloaded from Amazon, quite a while ago.
It's one of those that I've gone back to time and again for entertainment.
So read on and enjoy!

A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries #1)

by Elizabeth Hunter

5 out of 5

Synopsis
"No secret stays hidden forever."

A phone call from an old friend sets Dr. Giovanni Vecchio back on the path of a mystery he'd abandoned years before. He never expected a young librarian could hold the key to the search, nor could he have expected the danger she would attract. Now he and Beatrice De Novo will follow a twisted maze that leads from the archives of a university library, through the fires of Renaissance Florence, and toward a confrontation they never could have predicted.

A Hidden Fire is a paranormal mystery/romance for adult readers. It is the first book in the Elemental Mysteries Series.

Review
Beatrice De Novo is covering the evening shift at the university library, when she meets the mysterious Giovanni, who seeks to translate an ancient text.  B soon realises that she only ever sees Gio at night, so unless he's Batman, it looks like he's a vampire.

Beatrice, or B as she likes to be known, is a smart young woman whose skills are lost as a university librarian.  After she discovers what Gio is, she agrees to work for him, hunting down lost texts for clients.  She's one of those strong female characters that even though she can't beat vampires physically, she can out-match them mentally.

It is an unravelling mystery as to who Giovanni really is, and what his relationship to the antagonist is.  In the Elemental Mysteries series the vampire lore includes that each vampire has an affinity with one of the elements.  They can control the water, earth or air around them.  And then there's fire vampires - feared by their own kind as the majority are ticking time bombs and prone to kill those around them.  Guess which Gio is...

The supporting cast are amazing too.  Caspar, Gio's long-standing and very-human butler, who's not afraid to say what he thinks to his scary boss.  And then my favourite character - Carwyn.  An ancient Welsh vampire who loves Hawaiian shirts, pro wrestling, and also has the immortal line "Silly B, love is friendship...just with less clothes, which makes it far more brilliant.”

I think that's evidence enough.  It's free to download, and a lot of fun, you won't regret it.
